Intel has announced its fourth generation of Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed Sapphire Rapids, featuring the Intel 7 process and Golden Cove big-core architecture with support for new technologies such as PCIe 5.0, DDR5 and CXL 1.1. The processor supports up to 60 cores, with 56 cores actually enabled. Compared to its predecessor, the processor offers a 53% increase in base computing power, a 10x increase in AI performance, a 2x increase in 5G vRAN performance, a 2x increase in network & storage performance, a 3x increase in data analytics performance, and a 3.7x increase in scientific computing performance.

The built-in accelerators also boost average performance per watt for targeted workloads by 2.9x and save up to 70 watts per CPU in optimized power mode, resulting in a 52% to 66% reduction in total cost of ownership for enterprises, according to official Intel data. It is also worth noting that customer support and growth for quad-gen Xeon processors is at an all-time high.
Intel mentioned that all OEMs and ODMs are now delivering quad-gen Xeon based systems and that the top 10 cloud service providers are deploying cloud instances now and throughout 2023. While AMD has stolen a lot of market share over the past two years, Intel's performance shows that server/data centre customers are not so concerned about CPU core count and Intel Xeon's overall performance is still recognised. However, Intel has also taken up the core battle with its friends in the next generation of processors, and will launch Granite Rapids with an all-big-core architecture and Si erra Rapids processors, which will introduce a small-core architecture for the first time, the latter of which will be capable of 128 cores.
