TSMC plans to raise foundry prices again in the second half of this year, and some analysts say it should be a misinformation

        According to Digitimes, TSMC, which has raised foundry prices several times during the chip shortage period, may raise prices again in the second half of this year. Relevant media quoted sources from semiconductor equipment manufacturers as saying that TSMC may consider raising prices again in the second half of this year. TSMC did not comment on this.
 
 
        Taiwanese media pointed out that the industry believes that the relevant news should be misinformation, mainly because TSMC's strategy will not arbitrarily increase prices. In addition, during the critical period of semiconductor inventory adjustment, TSMC should share the difficulties with customers and allow customers to complete inventory disposal first. In order to facilitate the development of the industrial structure, unnamed industry sources revealed that when TSMC and IC design customers discussed and discussed this year's prices in the middle of last year, factors such as inflation and rising production expansion costs at home and abroad were taken into account, and by the beginning of 2023, quotations for each process were raised, with an average increase of about 3%.
        Recently, there has been news that TSMC plans to increase prices in the second half of the year due to cost considerations. Supply chain believes TSMC's new U.S. plant is a project investment, and related expenses are earmarked under TSMC's stable annual cash flow. If the investment cost of the new plant increases, it will shift to managing the supply chain and haggling instead of raising prices for customers.
        In addition, people familiar with the industry ecology said that recent market conditions are still in the inventory adjustment stage. Although there are urgent and short orders in the IC design industry, the number is still small, and due to timeliness, production will naturally increase, but it will affect the overall quotation. Dynamic impact is not great.
        Regarding the reasons why TSMC foundry prices may rise in the second half of the year, sources from semiconductor equipment suppliers revealed that it is related to cost increases, in response to rising costs. However, since semiconductor equipment manufacturers' sources have not disclosed more information on TSMC's possible price increase in the second half of the year, it is unclear how much the price increase may be and the processes that may be involved. Among the several price increases starting at the end of 2020, TSMC's price increase process is selective, and not all foundry prices for all process processes have been raised at once, but the prices of some processes have been raised each time.
