Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH announced the launch of two new fixed-gain infrared (IR) sensor modules, the TSSP93038DF1PZA and the leaded TSSP93038SS1ZA, to reduce costs and improve stability for outdoor sensor applications. The surface-mount TSSP93038DF1PZA and lead-style TSSP93038SS1ZA are packaged in a small Minimold package with a typical light intensity of 1.3 mW/m2 for stable operation in direct sunlight while being sensitive enough to support grating applications.

The recently announced Vishay Semiconductors device has controlled sensitivity to operate in direct sunlight without unwanted pulses. In addition, for short-range reflectance and proximity applications, the sensor sensitivity drop does not require extremely low forward emitter current, which can cause intensity output instability.
The TSSP93038DF1PZA and TSSP93038SS1ZA have a fast response time of 260 μs and a long proximity detection distance (1 m using TSAL6100 at 100 mA). With the same settings, the light curtain application can detect distances up to 11 meters. Use a more focused light emitter such as VSLY5940 or increase the emitter forward current to extend the detection distance.
Devices are suitable for detecting object distances for toys, remote-controlled aircraft, robots, proximity switches; traffic signal and parking lot presence detection, access control and water level sensors; and sporting events and lawn mower robot gratings. It can also be used as a reflective sensor for hand dryers, paper towel or soap dispensers, automatic faucets, restrooms, vending machine drop detection, and security and pet access gates.
The TSSP93038DF1PZA and TSSP93038SS1ZA operate at 2.0 V to 3.6 V, supply only 0.35 mA, and are sensitive to 38 kHz carrier frequencies. The devices receive infrared pulses from emitters with a peak wavelength of 940 nm, are insensitive to supply voltage ripple noise, are EMI shielded, and have infrared filters that suppress visible light. The sensor module is RoHS and Vishay Green compliant and halogen free. The new sensor is now available in sample and mass production with a six-week lead time.
