Will China's autonomous driving be blocked by the U.S. chip ban?

The US government plans to expand restrictions on US companies' exports of AI chips and chip-making equipment to China next month, Reuters reported, citing "people familiar with the matter", following a ban on artificial intelligence chips such as Nvidia's A100 and H100. AI chips from companies like Nvidia are now the core components of many Chinese car and technology companies that are focusing on autonomous driving. Although the sanctioned products do not involve such chips, the A100 and H100 are crucial to the training of AI algorithms, including autonomous driving, so the realization of autonomous control of AI chips is particularly critical to the development of autonomous driving in China. How will the U.S. export restrictions on Nvidia affect the development of autonomous driving in China?

One consequence of the U.S. technological crackdown on China is that Nvidia could also be implicated in the development of autonomous driving technology in China, an important area for AI chip applications. Chinese automakers and autonomous driving companies that focus on autonomous driving technology explicitly use Nvidia's AI chips.
"In China, the Nvidia Drive Orin AI chip has become a core component of EV manufacturers' assisted driving technology, and some automakers are also using Nvidia's Xavier chip." The Chinese EV companies that rely on Nvidia will not be affected by the US chip ban for the time being, as the Nvidia AI chips used by the companies are not covered by the export restrictions, according to a recent report by Consumer News & Business.
The America's "core limit having a direct effect on China's automated driving yet, but in the long run, the United States limit the export of nvidia A100 and H100 of AI algorithms, including automated driving training is crucial, and possibly in the future in the game of the automated driving technology, bring indirect techniques. As electrification and intelligence influence the automotive industry deeply, the important index to measure the performance of a car has changed from "horsepower" on the wheel to "computational power" inside the car. In recent years, Chinese car companies and technology companies have increased investment in AI computing facilities to use the cloud to train autonomous driving. The two chips may become the key to the "bottleneck", as some car companies build autonomous driving training centers based on Nvidia A100.
Although the current U.S. "core restrictions" on China point to the source of autonomous driving development, from the current development status, Nvidia's position is not irreplaceable. Baidu intelligent driving business group chief product architect jackieguo in the supply chain during the conference, said baidu has in-depth cooperation with nvidia in the cloud, the U.S. restrictions autonomous research and development for the future will produce certain influence, "but in the future all things will be localization, even in the case of the United States to crack down on, we also have a backup." In terms of localization, Baidu is working with domestic AI chip company Horizon to build autonomous driving solutions based on domestic chips, according to Guo. Domestic autonomous driving technology company Won Rong Qihang also publicly said that the Nvidia A100 is not without alternatives, and the U.S. export ban will have a limited impact on autonomous driving.
At present, China and the US are parallel leaders in global autonomous driving technology. With the increasing demand for autonomous driving chips in the future, the safety of China's autonomous driving chip supply chain has attracted much attention. From 2021 to 2029, China's market share of semiconductors used in autonomous driving will grow from 12 percent to 22 percent, according to semiconductor company Infineon. It is the automotive chip and its ecosystem that will determine the success or failure of the entire new automotive supply chain. Therefore, he suggested that the domestic car companies should adopt the strategy of "walking on two legs", using domestic and foreign chips in parallel, in the import of chips "supply interruption" when the alternative, to avoid the "neck" event staged in the automotive field.
In the field of domestic autonomous driving chips, a number of leading enterprises such as Huawei, Horizon and Black Sesame have emerged, driving domestic autonomous driving chips to achieve autonomy and control. Huang Chang, co-founder and chief technology officer of Horizon, said at the supply chain conference that the Journey 5 chip produced by Horizon this year specifically for high-level autonomous driving not only has high peak computing power, but also has more advantages than many internationally leading well-known chips in terms of performance and unit cost of performance and power consumption.
