Globalwafers, the world's third largest silicon wafer producer, announced that it would build a new 12 inch silicon wafer plant in Sherman, Texas, the United States. This is also the location of globitech, the U.S. subsidiary of universal wafer. It is expected that it will be put into operation in 2025, creating up to 1500 jobs in the city.
According to the announcement, this 300mm (12 inch) wafer factory is also the first new similar factory in the United States in the past 20 years, with an initial investment of US $2billion. Texas governor Greg Abbott predicted that with the chip industry subsidies being discussed in Congress, the investment in the new Fab would reach 5billion dollars in a few years.
Globegroup said that the new plant will be built in stages according to the customer's long-term contract demand, and the equipment will be stationed in succession. After all the projects are completed, the complete plant area will reach 3.2 million square feet, and the maximum production capacity can reach 1.2 million pieces per month.
Xuxiulan, chairman and CEO of globegroup, said that with the global chip shortage and geopolitical worries continuing, globegroup wafer has the opportunity to build an advanced process and innovative 12 inch semiconductor wafer factory to increase the toughness of the semiconductor supply chain. Through local production and nearby supply, the carbon footprint will be significantly reduced in the current global ESG wave, which will benefit both globegroup wafer and its customers.
