Although the current shortage of consumer electronics chip market has been greatly alleviated, and there is a trend that inventory backlog is difficult to digest. However, the global shortage of automotive chips is still tense, forming a confrontation with the chip market for consumer electronics.

This has also led the global auto manufacturers to relieve the pressure by continuously reducing production. According to the latest report of auto industry data prediction company autoforecastsolutions (AFS), as of July 3, the global auto market has reduced the cumulative production of about 2.5 million vehicles this year due to the shortage of chips.
AFS said that last week, global automakers reduced production by 167000 vehicles due to lack of chips. Among them, the production of about 68000 vehicles was cut in Europe and 36000 in North America. It is predicted that by the end of this year, global automakers will reduce production by 3.31 million vehicles due to lack of chips.
AFS estimates that Europe is still the region with the largest production reduction due to the lack of chips, with a production reduction of 888000 vehicles. The production reduction in North America is about 845000 vehicles, second only to Europe. The production reduction in Asia outside China increased from 487000 to 515000 vehicles, and the production reduction in Chinese Mainland increased from 107000 to 122000 vehicles.
However, the production reduction plan is not enough to fully explain the whole situation of chip shortage. The reality is far more serious than the exposed situation, which is deeply felt by automotive OEMs. GM said in a regulatory document last week that it produced 95000 vehicles in the second quarter that were incomplete due to lack of components. Most of GM's incomplete vehicles were produced in June. GM is expected to complete the installation of these vehicles and deliver them to retailers by the end of this year, the document said.
Olakaellenius, CEO of Mercedes Benz, said last week that the global semiconductor shortage is expected to cover the whole of 2022 and continue until 2023. He said that the semiconductor situation is very serious and will become a challenge for the whole industry this year and next year.
