Arm exec: We respect RISC-V, but it's not yet a competitor

        September 19 news, Arm recently launched the next-generation data center chip technology Neoverse V2. During the press conference, Arm's VP of Product Solutions, Dermot O'Driscoll, answered questions about RISC-V.
 
 
        Dermot O'Driscoll was the first to admit that RISC-V is driving "some competition" with British chip designers, saying "it can help us all focus and make sure we do better".
        Going on, O'Driscoll highlighted the strength of Arm's intellectual property, licensing, customer relationships and software ecosystem, saying that while RISC-V has been around since 2010, the free and open instruction set architecture (ISA) has only recently entered commercial product. 
        Chris Bergey, senior vice president and general manager of Arm's infrastructure business, also said: "We really don't see RISC-V as a serious competitor in the data center space now or in the near future."
        Bergey believes that if you are willing to develop your own CPU cores, rather than buying and complying with the Arm architecture license, then RISC-V may be a good choice,
        While Arm may not currently see RISC-V as a threat, O'Driscoll said the company is "absolutely watching where RISC-V is going."

        Semiconductor industry analysis firm SemiAnalysis analyst Dylan Patel said that Apple is shifting its embedded chip core instruction set from the ARM architecture to the RISC-V architecture, and Google will also apply part of the design from the SiFive X280 core on the TPU.
