On July 6, Japanese chip maker Renesas Electronics issued a statement saying that a factory in Kumamoto, Japan, was shut down after lightning struck power lines.
The statement pointed out that at 5:43 a.m. Japan time on July 5, due to typhoon Aere in Kumamoto City triggered heavy rain and lightning, the company's local Kawajiri factory power lines were struck by lightning, resulting in a momentary voltage drop, causing the factory to be temporarily shut down since July 5.

Previously, Renesas Electronics had been implementing emergency countermeasures, such as installing UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply System), to prevent the instantaneous voltage drop. However, this time the voltage drop lasted much longer than what had happened in the last 10 years, and also longer than Renesas had predicted, thus causing a temporary shutdown of about 90% of the plant's equipment.
At present, Renesas Electronics has carried out production equipment restart operations, some production processes have resumed operation on July 6, Japan time. Renesas expects that production capacity will return to pre-shutdown (before the momentary voltage drop) levels on July 11.
Renesas said that the transient voltage drop would cause damage to the work-in-progress (semi-finished products) being produced at the plant. Renesas expects the damage, including the number of damaged semi-finished products and the loss caused by the shutdown, to be equivalent to 2 weeks of factory capacity. Information shows that Renesas Electronics is one of the world's largest automotive chip maker, its Kawajiri plant mainly produces automotive MCUs and other products.
