Recently, U.S. semiconductor company Marvell (MMC) established an IC design center in Ho Chi Minh City. Marvell (Vietnam) is said to have approximately 300 employees, 97 percent of whom are engineers.
With the launch of the center in Vietnam, Marvell (Vietnam) will join the United States, India and Israel as one of Marvell's four global R&D centers.
To support the design center's talent needs, Marvell plans to invest in developing essential technical skills in the region through the newly established Marvell Excellence Scholarship Program - Vietnam. The program will support talented students pursuing engineering and computer science degrees at select universities in Vietnam.
Marvell is committed to working to attract outstanding technical talent to the center, contributing to job opportunities, career development and the development of a high-value microchip ecosystem in Vietnam.
Dr. Loi Nguyen, executive vice president of Marvell's Fiber and Copper Link Division and a native of Ho Chi Minh City, said, "One of the major challenges in the global semiconductor industry is the shortage of research and engineering, which provides tremendous opportunities for aspiring Vietnamese technology talent. Marvell's establishment of a design center in Vietnam is an important step in bridging this talent gap and promoting the semiconductor industry."
Dr. Nguyen added, "Marvell is committed to attracting the best and brightest engineering talent to its semiconductor design center in Vietnam and to increasing the number of high-value semiconductor jobs, careers and ecosystems in the country."
Previously, Marvell had R&D centers in Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu and Beijing in China, with a total China workforce of nearly 1,000 at one point, including a Shanghai R&D center that once had more than 800 R&D staff and was the third largest R&D center outside of its U.S. headquarters and Israel, although in 2015, Marvell laid off hundreds of people in its China mobile business unit due to business restructuring. In the last year, Marvell continued to downsize its R&D team in China, and in March of this year, Marvell laid off 320 people for the first time in the U.S. and all of its China R&D team.
