Samsung is set to invest $3.1 billion in the production of OLED screens for tablets and laptops, according to Yonhap News Agency. The investment will allow Samsung's display division to adapt its production line in Asan, south of Seoul, to produce displays suitable for these devices and increase panel production from about 4.5 million to more than 10 million per year. To support this expansion, Samsung will reportedly hire 26,000 employees for the line.
The South Korean president deemed Samsung's investment important enough to attend the announcement of the plan and heartily endorse it.
In making this investment, Samsung intends to make its factories ready for the production of more advanced screens. Demand for OLED panels is expected to increase dramatically in the coming years. The technology has been used in high-end TVs and desktop screens for some time. In recent years, smartphone displays have also joined the competition.
Considering that Chinese brands are catching up with Samsung and other Korean companies, the political support is not surprising. Its government has set aside 420 billion won (about $320 million) for OLED development. It's also offering tax breaks to tech companies working in the industry, according to South Korea's Pulse News.
Samsung is counting on the growing demand for OLEDs to be reflected in the tablet and laptop segments as well, where the technology hasn't been as popular.
