UMC: First quarter order visibility is low, capacity utilization rate falls to 70%

        March 7, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily News, the foundry UMC said the first quarter order visibility is low, wafer shipments are expected to decline 17-19% sequentially, capacity utilization will drop to 70%, is expected as the industry continues to de-stocking, the second half of the year demand is expected to gradually warm up.
        Financial data show that UMC's February revenue fell to NT$16.931 billion (currently about US$552 million), down 13.56% sequentially and 18.64% year-over-year, a low point in the past 22 months; cumulative revenue for the first two months of this year was NT$36.52 billion (currently about US$172 million), down 11.53% year-over-year. 
        UMC pointed out that, from the application side, demand for cell phones, PCs and consumer electronics continued to be weak in the first half of the year, and customers are still prioritizing inventory de-stocking. 
        In terms of capital expenditure, UMC plans to spend $3 billion this year, of which 90% will be spent on 12-inch and the rest on 8-inch plants. 
        For comparison, UMC's January 2023 revenue was NT$19.59 billion (currently about US$638 million), down 6.47% sequentially and 4.31% year-over-year; its 2022 revenue was NT$278.705 billion (currently about US$9.082 billion), up 30.8% year-over-year.
