Vietnamese automaker VinFast said in a statement that it is working with Taiwan-based battery startup ProLogium Technology to develop solid-state electric vehicle batteries for delivery as early as 2024, according to media reports.
VinFast said on July 6 that it is investing "tens of millions of dollars" in ProLogium Technology through its parent company Vingroup to support the startup's proprietary solid-state technology. VinFast said the two companies also signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure that ProLogium Technology provides batteries for its next-generation vehicles.
ProLogium Technology is one of several startups working on solid-state battery technology, which could significantly reduce the cost of producing electric vehicles. VinFast says on its website that its solid-state batteries offer higher energy density and faster charging than conventional batteries, which use a liquid electrolyte instead of a solid.
VinFast said it may also establish a joint-venture battery factory in Vietnam with ProLogium Technology. VinFast has begun taking orders for the VF8 and VF9 models in the U.S. and expects to deliver them by the end of this year. VinFast took delivery of its first electric vehicle in Vietnam last December, but that model is smaller than the two- and three-row crossovers coming to the U.S. and Canada.
VinFast said in March that it would build an electric vehicle assembly plant and battery manufacturing facility in North Carolina. VinFast said it would break ground on the new plant this year and begin production in 2024.
