Ming-Chi Guo, a well-known Apple (AAPL) analyst at Tianfeng International, said in social media that according to the latest supply chain survey, Sapphire Rapids, Intel's (INTC) next-generation Xeon server chip, may be delayed until the second quarter of 2023 for shipment, significantly later than the market consensus of the second half of 2022, which is not good for Intel and its server supply chain This is bad for both Intel and its server supply chain.

Sapphire Rapids has been delayed several times and was originally planned to ship in the fourth quarter of 2021, Guo said.
SapphireRapids could significantly increase the unit price of related components, benefiting suppliers' revenue and EPS, so the delayed shipments will be detrimental to Intel's revenue performance with its server supply chain, which primarily includes ABF, server manufacturers, heat dissipation-related, memory and power management ICs. In addition, there is no guarantee that demand will still be there when Sapphire Rapids begins to ship on a large scale, especially during the recession.

According to the data, Sapphire Rapids will use a process called "Intel 7" and utilize EMIB technology, which combines substrate and interposer, resulting in better output and latency than outsourced packaging, with the downside of higher costs. Although Intel handles most of the packaging work itself, shortages of key raw materials have affected production. Since Sapphire Rapids is Intel's first Xeon chip to fully adopt EMIB technology, it is expected to sell at a higher price.
