On November 22nd, Renesas Electronics announced the expansion of its 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) product line with the launch of a new RX product, the RX23E-B, for high-end industrial sensor systems. The new product, a member of the popular RX product family, features a high-precision analog front end (AFE) designed for systems that require fast, accurate analog signal measurement.

The new MCU integrates a 24-bit Delta-Sigma A/D converter with a conversion speed of up to 125 kSPS (125,000 samples per second), which is eight times faster than the existing RX23E-A product. It handles precise A/D conversions while reducing root-mean-square (RMS) noise to 1/3 (0.18µVrms @1kSPS) compared to the RX23E-A. With the ability to more quickly and accurately measure critical parameters such as strain, temperature, pressure, flow rate, current, and voltage, the RX23E-B is ideal for use in high-end sensor devices, measurement instruments, and test equipment. Of particular note, the RX23E-B has enough performance to drive force-sensitive sensors used in industrial robots, which typically require measurements at 10 µsec (100,000 samples/sec). This product also integrates the AFE and MCU on a single chip, which reduces the overall system size and component count.
Sakae Ito, Vice President of the IoT Platform Business Division at Renesas said, "With the introduction of the RX23E-B with AFE sensor interface, we can now serve a wide range of sensing applications from mid-range to high-end systems. We also continue to expand Renesas' offerings to meet the growing demand for low power consumption in battery-powered and wireless sensors."
Takatsugu Nemoto, President at Meiko Electronics, said, "At Meiko Electronics, we have been developing evaluation boards and providing design support to our customers since the launch of the RX23E-A. We have been working with Renesas since the launch of the RX23E-A, and have been working with Renesas since the launch of the RX23E-A. Now, with the introduction of the RX23E-B featuring a high-speed Δ-sigma A/D converter, more customers will be able to experience the benefits of its enhanced conversion performance, compact board design and reduced component count."
Similar to the RX23E-A, the RX23E-B integrates a CPU based on the 32MHz RXv2 core with digital signal processing (DSP) instructions and a floating-point unit (FPU), and uses the same manufacturing process to integrate the AFE into a single chip. It offers new peripheral functions such as a 16-bit D/A converter for measurement adjustment, self-diagnostics, and analog signal output. The product's +/-10V analog input enables +/-10V measurements using a 5V power supply, eliminating the need for external components or additional power supplies. Also included is an LCD controller that supports up to 40 SEG x 4 COM and a real-time clock (RTC) function.
Large instruments that need to control and measure multiple targets (e.g., robotic arms, gas and liquid analyzers) place a huge demand on distributed processing architectures. Instead of relying on a dedicated MCU to manage all functions, in a distributed processing design, each function can operate as a separate module, thereby taking care of tasks such as motor control, sensor measurement, and temperature control. This modular approach allows for independent development, resulting in greater design flexibility and simplified maintenance. Since each module requires an MCU for computation, engineers can more easily develop sensor modules using MCUs with built-in AFEs, rather than combining discrete AFE chips with separate MCUs.
The RX23E-B is available in a version that supports A/D data conversion rates up to 125 kSPS and a version that supports 31.25 kSPS. Both products bring flexible data rate settings from 3.8 SPS to the maximum supported, allowing users to choose the optimal balance between data rate and noise based on their specific system requirements. Both products support a 5.5mm square 100-pin BGA package and a 6mm square 40-pin QFN package for compact applications, and are also available in wide-pin packages ranging from 48 pins to 100 pins.
Renesas has developed a high-speed pressure control system by combining the new RX23E-B MCU, designed for precise pressure measurement and control, with an intelligent power device responsible for driving a solenoid valve. The integrated high-precision AFE enables precise pressure control and minimizes the number of components in the design, thus reducing BOM cost and board mounting area. These "winning portfolios" are based on compatible devices that work seamlessly together, with technology-proven system architectures that enable optimized, low-risk designs for faster time-to-market. Renesas now offers more than 400 Success Portfolios based on a wide range of products in its portfolio, enabling customers to accelerate the design process and bring products to market faster.
