on July 6, Renesas electronics said in a statement that at 5:43 a.m. Japanese time on July 5, due to the rainstorm caused by Typhoon No. 4 "Aere", a transmission line of the company's Kawa saki factory in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, was hit by lightning, and the instantaneous voltage fell, causing the production equipment of the factory to suspend production, with a maximum loss of about 2 weeks of production. It is reported that the company's chuanjiri factory mainly produces low-end MCU.
In response to the instantaneous voltage drop, Renesas has been implementing emergency measures, such as installing uninterruptible power supply (UPS). However, the voltage drop lasted longer than any accident in the past decade and any estimate made by the company, resulting in the temporary shutdown of about 90% of the production equipment in chuanjiri factory.
The instantaneous voltage drop is expected to affect the products being produced by chuanjiri factory, with a maximum loss of about 2 weeks' output, but Renesas is trying to resume production. Renesas is restarting the production equipment of chuanjiri factory. Some production processes have been resumed on July 6, and it is expected to resume full production capacity on July 11.
Risa's factory in Japan has experienced other natural disasters and accidents, such as earthquakes and fires. On the evening of March 16 this year, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit the coast of Fukushima, Japan. At that time, Renesas said that its three factories in Japan had also suspended production due to the earthquake. The three factories, Naka, takazaki and mize, were all located near the earthquake stricken area, and two factories had power cuts overnight. Among them, Naka and mize factories in Reza produce microcontrollers for automotive and industrial applications, while Takasaki factory produces PMOS chips for converting AC and DC currents.
In March last year, a fire broke out in Reza Naka factory, burning 11 machines, accounting for 2% of the factory's production equipment.
