TSMC released its second quarter results. The financial report showed that the consolidated revenue in the second quarter was about NT $534.14 billion (about 12.05 billion), and the after tax net profit was about NT $237.03 billion.
TSMC said that its sales in 2022 (in US dollars) are expected to increase by about 30%, and its production capacity will not be affected by the delay in equipment supply this year. However, at present, customer demand still exceeds the company's supply capacity, and production capacity continues to be tight this year.
For the prospect of chip demand, TSMC said that there will be a typical cycle of chip demand decline in 2023, but the overall decline will be better than that in 2008. At the same time, the company expects customers to start reducing inventory, but at present, the inventory of high-end smartphones is not too much. Therefore, for TSMC, 2023 is still a "year of growth".
In addition, the growth of the company in 2023 will be supported by advanced technology, and high performance computing (HPC) will become the main engine of long-term growth. The company currently predicts that the capacity utilization rate will remain good in 2023.

In terms of the production time of the next generation of chips, TSMC reiterated that the company's 3nm (N3) chips will be put into production in the second half of this year and contribute to revenue in the first half of next year. It is worth mentioning that TSMC's 3nm process has many derivative versions, including N3, n3p, n3s, n3x, n3e, which will be mass produced in the next two to three years.
For 2nm chips (N2), TSMC reiterated that it would achieve mass production in 2025. 2nm chip is a major node of TSMC. This process will use nanosheets to replace FinFET, which means that TSMC process has officially entered the era of GAA transistors. Compared with 3nm chips, 2nm chips are 10-15% faster at the same power consumption. At the same speed, the power consumption is reduced by 25-30%.
It home learned that TSMC's shipments of 5nm process wafers accounted for 21% of the company's revenue in the second quarter (20% in the previous quarter), and shipments of 7Nm process wafers accounted for 30% of the company's revenue (30% in the previous quarter). In this quarter, 5nm process revenue continued to increase, but it did not exceed the revenue brought by 7Nm process. In addition, TSMC advanced processes (7Nm and more advanced processes) accounted for 51% of the total revenue, which continued to expand from 50% in the previous quarter.
